John Cena Calls Himself “a Mercenary in a Meat Suit” While Promoting Heads of State

The actor stars as the U.S. President alongside Idris Elba in the new Prime Video action-comedy.

John Cena is embracing his action-hero persona with humor, referring to his acting style as “a mercenary in a meat suit” during a promo for Heads of State, now streaming on Prime Video. In the film, Cena plays the President of the United States opposite Idris Elba’s British Prime Minister. The two are forced to team up when a plot to blow up Air Force One leaves them stranded in Eastern Europe.

While reading reviews of his work—including Heads of State, The Fast & Furious franchise, Blockers, Peacemaker, and Ricky Stanicky—Cena humbly admits he doesn’t try to outthink the audience or his colleagues. “To be able to think for an audience is impossible,” he says. “I do what I’m told.”

Cena also reacted to praise from his co-star Idris Elba, who called him “very funny” and a natural at improvisation. Cena replied with gratitude and joked, “Except this time I’m the president and he’s the prime minister.”

Director Ilya Naishuller added to the praise, calling the duo’s charisma and chemistry “off the charts.” Cena quipped that if Naishuller still had kind words after long shooting days, “he’s a great liar.”

Heads of State is an action-packed buddy comedy, blending global stakes with laugh-out-loud moments, and marks a fun reunion for Cena and Elba after The Suicide Squad.

Watch Heads of State now on Prime Video.
