Benny Blanco Admits He Never Watched Selena Gomez in Wizards of Waverly Place Until They Started Dating

The producer finally watched Gomez’s Disney Channel series before her reboot return.
Benny Blanco may be engaged to one of Disney Channel’s most iconic stars, but he confessed that he had never seen Selena Gomez’s show Wizards of Waverly Place until they began dating.
Appearing on the Therapuss With Jake Shane podcast, Blanco admitted: “I knew she was, like, a kid star, but I had never seen any of it.” The only part he recognized? The theme song — because Billie Eilish used it as inspiration for her hit “Bad Guy.”
As Selena Gomez prepared to reprise her role as Alex Russo in the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place reboot, Blanco said he asked her to show him the original series. Though she was hesitant at first, she eventually agreed and played him “a few good scenes.” After watching, Blanco simply said, “I get it.”
Blanco also revealed he had never heard of the Jonas Brothers — despite Gomez’s past relationship with Nick Jonas — until their 2019 comeback single “Sucker.” He explained that he was older than the Disney Channel crowd during the height of its early 2000s era.
Selena Gomez made her return to Disney in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place in 2024, reuniting with co-star David Henrie. She is confirmed to appear in the show’s upcoming second season, continuing her legacy as Alex Russo.
