James Gunn is opening up about one of the most controversial changes in the DC Universe reboot — parting ways with Henry Cavill as Superman. In a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the DC Studios co-head revealed that letting go of Cavill was “a total bummer” and “really unfair,” though necessary for the direction of his vision for the franchise.

The twist? Cavill had just announced his return as Superman on the same day Gunn finalized his contract with DC Studios. Caught in a leadership vacuum, Cavill wasn’t aware that the new studio head planned to recast the iconic role. “I’m like, ‘What is going on? We know what the plan is,’” Gunn recalled. Despite the awkward situation, Gunn praised Cavill for handling it with grace and professionalism, even requesting to break the news himself rather than let the studio go public first.
Ultimately, the role went to David Corenswet, who was selected over other rumored candidates including Jacob Elordi and Nicholas Hoult. The 2025 reboot Superman, now in theaters, showcases Corenswet as the next-generation Man of Steel — ushering in a new era under Gunn’s DC Universe initiative, Gods and Monsters.

Still, fans of Cavill shouldn’t lose hope. Gunn emphasized that he’s open to working with the Man of Steel actor in the future, stating, “I would love to put Henry in something.”
Despite the bittersweet transition, it’s clear there’s no bad blood — and the door remains open for Cavill to return to the DCU in a different role.
