Hugh Jackman Almost Played Wolverine in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man – Here’s Why It Didn’t Happen

Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever existed, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine almost shared the screen with Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man — but one surprisingly simple reason stopped the epic crossover: they couldn’t find the suit.

As revealed in a 2013 interview and now resurfacing amid a new Spider-Man theatrical re-release, Jackman said a cameo in 2002’s Spider-Man was seriously planned. “We really tried to get me to come on and do something — even a walk-through,” Jackman recalled. “The problem was, we couldn’t find the suit. The suit was stuck in some thing.”

At the time, Marvel characters’ film rights were scattered across studios — 20th Century Fox controlled the X-Men, while Sony Pictures held Spider-Man. Despite this, both studios were open to collaboration. Unfortunately, without Wolverine’s iconic costume, the plan was scrapped.

Fans now have another reason to revisit the Spider-Man trilogy, with Spider-Man 2.1 (a longer cut of Spider-Man 2) getting a 4K theatrical release in September 2025. It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate what was — and dream of what could have been.

Jackman, who returns in Deadpool & Wolverine, has always been a fan of shared universes, saying, “In the comic books, they’re just mashing together all the time — and it’s awesome.”

With Disney’s acquisition of both Fox and Marvel, and a partnership with Sony over Spider-Man, fans may yet see Jackman’s Wolverine interact with more beloved heroes — maybe even Maguire’s Spider-Man.
