Marvel Studios to Recast Tony Stark and the X-Men After Secret Wars, Kevin Feige Confirms

Big changes are coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a major announcement during a press event for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that the MCU will recast Tony Stark (Iron Man), Steve Rogers (Captain America), and the entire X-Men team following 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.

While fans have long speculated about a major shake-up, Feige’s comments now make it official: Marvel is preparing for a “reset” of the MCU timeline, not just a continuation.

“Reset, Not Reboot”: The Future of the MCU Post-Secret Wars

Feige was clear in saying the term “reboot” doesn’t quite apply to what Marvel is planning.

“’Reboot’ is a scary word… Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people,” Feige explained. “We’re thinking more along the lines of a reset, a singular timeline.”

According to Feige, Avengers: Secret Wars — slated for release in 2027 — will serve as the turning point, closing out the post-Endgame chapter and setting the stage for what’s next.

Why Tony Stark and the X-Men Are Being Recast

The decision to recast Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and the original X-Men characters isn’t just about age or contracts — it’s about evolution. Marvel is looking ahead to the next decade and beyond.

  • Tony Stark, the heart of the Infinity Saga, will be introduced with a new actor.
  • The X-Men — long teased since Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox — will debut as an all-new team in a reimagined form.

Feige has teased a “new age of mutants” since 2024. While familiar faces like Patrick Stewart (Professor X) and Kelsey Grammer (Beast) have made cameo appearances, the first full showing of X-Men characters in the MCU will come in Avengers: Doomsday (2026).

X-Men Legacy: A History of Recasts

This isn’t the first time the X-Men franchise has gone through a major cast overhaul. In 2011, X-Men: First Class introduced younger versions of core characters, including:

  • James McAvoy as Professor X
  • Michael Fassbender as Magneto
  • Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique

These characters carried the franchise through Days of Future Past, Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix — blending new and old timelines in epic fashion.

Now, with Secret Wars acting as a soft reset, Marvel has the chance to bring in fresh actors and align the X-Men more closely with MCU continuity.

What This Means for Marvel Fans

With only one film released in 2024 (Deadpool & Wolverine) and three in 2025, Marvel has slowed its release cadence significantly — a deliberate shift to focus on quality, cohesion, and a fresh start.

The return of classic X-Men actors like Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Halle Berry is more of a sendoff than a revival. It’s clear that Marvel Studios is moving toward long-term planning with a new cast, new stories, and a new generation of heroes.

Final Thoughts: A New Era Begins

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe gears up for a massive transition, one thing is certain: change is coming. Whether you’re excited or nervous about new actors taking on beloved roles like Iron Man and Storm, there’s no denying the MCU is entering a bold new phase.
